My Design - Promotional Items

I've been helping my dad designing some promotional material for his restaurant business. It's been fun to design stuff that actually people receive daily rather than waiting for years for it to come out to the public. I learn that without audience art is nothing but some ideas on paper. Public audience is the main reason art is expanding. At least in my opinion.

Sculpting Base Form - Female pt.1

I spent like 3-4 hours on this model and this is what I got. Then I brought it to Photoshop and did a little paint over the 3d model. Still not sure what kind of design I should go, I know it should be Chinese/oriental design but I never design before. I guess I just need to keep trying.

Final Concept - Project II

I got the full idea of what I want my second character to be. My vision is clear, so I'm just gonna stop right here with the concept. I'll practice again some more once I completed the project. Anyway here is the image, Title "God Empress Zhang".

New Website, New Render!

Please visit my new website at http://mostinterestingmanart.weebly.com/
Simple but it will do its job well. Anyway I did say I'm not 100% satisfy with my old presentation final render, so I did a new one.

Final Render

I finally completed the render in Maya mental ray. I'm still not so satisfied with the final render settings I have, but I'm very happy to be able to finished the model, I also able to create animation friendly rig for game. Lots of thing I've learned through the process and yet lots of little details still missing from my artwork. I'll keep learning till I got it all.

Baking Texture completed

I had completed the texturing phase. Quite tedious work but I learned so much technical aspects of modeling, UV-ing and texture maps. I read books, search for help on some CG forum, watch video tutorials, basically find all helps I can get. Although the best help I get is from trying and practice. Practice makes me faster, remember stuff easier and trying helped me find the answer. Anyway here is my updates on the game character.

Circus Maximus Aired Today!

I was working on my low cage model this morning, and took a little break halfway. I opened up Zbrush and "hey why not try composite some images from Zbrush render!"
that was exactly what I do next. Base on Spartacus Blood and Sand Promotional Image Poster.

Painting Skin Completed

I'll say 1 more day for texturing then I can move on. I posted some shots, some of the props aren't fully painted, but the skin is complete.

Test Render in Maya

I did spent couple of hours trying to get a perfect render of my SSS shader but the result was absolutely terrible. I can't figure out why its not showing my texture and everything seem to look "waxy". I just stop and then I tried simple in game rendering style, with normal, diffuse and spec map. I used Blinn as my material. Took me only 1 hour of tweaking to get acceptable in game look, next gen look!! I'll continue texturing the rest of the assets then I'll post it up.

Painting Skin in Zbrush

Alright I did a simple uv layout in Maya, just to allow me to paint the model in Zbrush. Then I start painting the skin layer(backscatter, epidermal, subdermal, etc) For this test I painted only the head. I add matcap to it and then tweaked the color and add a little photoshoped texture. And here are the screens from Zbrush Viewport. Very happy with the result.

Sculpting Completed

After days of trying I finally have to end the sculpting phase. I will add more details and appeal through texture and lighting (which I'm not so sure if I can do it, but I will not try, I will succeed - Thanks Yoda!). Anyway here some pict of those sculpt.

Head Detailing

I took some time to really understand pores, wrinkles and facial details. I read books such as Scott Spencer's Zbrush Advanced Character Creation, then google some image reference, I also read some online article. I really spent some time to create good finishing details rather than just over crowded my sculpting with unnecessary details.
Anyway here test render I did in Zbrush.

Start Simple - Cloth Sculpting

"Humble Start"
I've been keep repeating these words in my head since I start sculpting the cloth.
Thanks to Scott Eaton explanation on Zbrush website, combined with determination to create good looking fabric I able to at least have a good start.

Sculpting The Upper Body pt.1

Sculpting the head and the upper body in Zbrush. Very fun but I can't make anymore mistakes, I should stay low with the intensity of the brushes and also slowly build the form. Before I was all about going crazy with every stroke.

Finalizing The Model in Maya

I got all geometry modeled out in Maya. What a wonderful feeling! Finally the fun time will soon begin, tomorrow actually. Well anyway here some picture of the final model in Maya. Lots of stuff like the fingers and proportion need to be fix in Zbrush. Anyway the white stuff is the cloth/garment that will be sculpted in Zbrush.

Modeling Props

It wasn't my original design, I was planning to model a simple "chest piece plate". But I spent too much time on it and I got a better one. Happy accident which I have not meet for some time. The other image is just a simple gladius.

Male Anatomy Sketch

Couple hours doodling in Photoshop. Always been curious about human's back anatomy, couldn't find a good reference picture. So I open my old anatomy book and begin my anatomical journey from there.

Modeling The Helmet pt.4

I wasn't so sure if I'm gonna be able to make a hard surface prop. I usually stop halfway and the final piece is a mesh. But this time I put patience as well as passion. I slowly sculpt the shape and after couple of hours tweaking vertices, I got what I wanted - a helmet. Man I'm so hopeful now, this is a good start I said to myself.

Correcting Anatomy & Proportion pt.3

I ended up have to corrected the proportion of the body. Now I'm trying to get the basic structure of the facial features of my character's head. I'll keep modeling in Maya until my mesh ready for the Detailing step.

Modeling Male Body Polygon pt.2

A little update on the project I currently work on. Finally finish the base body mesh. Still not sure what kind of character I'm trying to portray, but soon I gotta figure it out anyway. This mesh about 3000 tris/1500 faces.
